Made from 100% recycled material!

By Mary Webb

The Mountainsmith 2012 Tour lumbar pack is a viable alternative to the traditional over-the-shoulder backpack. The Tour pack features fresh design elements for the new year, an internal padded sleeve, a raised dual density lumbar control point pad, an air mesh back panel with durable water repellent (DWR), increased ergonomics and nylon reinforcements.

In addition to design enhancements, Mountainsmith incorporates tried and true features from previous designs, 100% recycled PET fabric, two deep-zippered pockets, two drink holders, mid-waist straps and removable shoulder strap.

Quality characteristics, old and new, unite together to make your hiking experience a fortified adventure. The Tour facilitates traveling as well, we experienced improved efficiency and organization on our flight to San Diego, California.

On our day hike to Lake Shasta Dam, I had plenty of room in the Tour’s deep-zippered pockets to store personal belongings, necessary for this adventurous writer to function in the great outdoors. There are two zippered-pockets in this lumbar series Tour pack, the main compartment and the front panel.

The main compartment was just right to help me store a lightweight jacket, electronic music device, GPS cache unit, trail mix, flashlight and a tube of sunscreen. An internal padded sleeve is sewn in the main pocket which allowed me to place edibles on one side and technological devices on the other. I like how the padded sleeve is made of stretch fabric, as it forgives items that may be larger on either side.

Waistband clips into place for superb support

A suspended zip up pocket is sewn into the main compartment. As the main compartment is quite deep, it was nice to have this suspended pocket to place nutrition bars and change; this permitted time to snack at our rest point instead of spending precious moments digging for power bars at the bottom of the bag.

There is sufficient room for water and juice inside the main compartment of the Tour, but you will frequently take advantage of the two water bottle pockets located on either side of the exterior, holding up to 32 ounces of thirst quenching beverages. The water bottle pockets have sewn-in elastic bands that expand and contract to oblige various sized drinks.

The front panel pocket is also deep, yet doesn’t have the volume width we find in the main compartment. I kept my keys in this front compartment, as there is a key ring sewn inside. It was nice to return home “fumble free” in search of the house key. I was eager to kick off my hiking boots, jump into the living room and relax with a book.

Both the main compartment and front panel pockets consist of yellow fabric lining, contrasting nicely to the color ways of our Tour. In addition to serving as an aesthetic liner, the yellow color promotes visibility to motorists and passersby. Additional reflective hints are found in the front panel elastic band. This elastic band can be cinched up tight to keep items in the front panel from tossing about along winding treks.

Using the Tour helped make our traveling trouble-free. The back foam panel has an open-face pocket that held our San Diego airline tickets, rental car confirmation and luggage claim tickets. The documents were held securely in place and accessible amidst the hustle and bustle of travelers.

Expandable water bottle pockets hold up to 32 ounces.

DWR is evident throughout the back foam panel. This technology was a welcomed addition on a warm California day, as quite a bit of perspiration accumulated down and along my spine. Sweat was wicked away along my lower back, keeping me nice and dry.

Many athletes know that the strength of most exercise comes from the core of your abdomen. Mountainsmith created a dual density lumbar control point pad in the Tour to secure the pack load to the lumbar region, locking it into the small of the back. The weight of the pack is ergonomically correct and will appropriately disburse weight towards the control point pad. I felt stable on uneven terrain.

I correctly used the mid-waist straps of the Tour by pulling the adjustable straps to their proper position. It was a reprieve to walk the full distance to the dam without my neck and shoulders bearing the weight of a traditional back pack.

The two mid-waist straps of the Lumbar pack not only have two mesh pockets sewn into the straps, where we kept some extra cash for coffee, but also have a tuck-away waist belt clip that locks firmly in place. When you are traveling long distances, you may require secondary support out on the trail. The lumbar Tour pack has a removable shoulder strap with a sliding pad that helps carry the weight of heavier jackets and water bottles. For those who need even greater support for the load, a strapette compatible system is also available for an additional $25.00.

Of all the enhanced features of the Tour, the high tenacity nylon reinforcements are ideal for extending the longevity of the pack. While hiking in the Tour, the mid-waist straps rubbed against my body; these areas along the straps that receive this kind of wear and tear are now protected like never before.

While we selected the heritage red color, for a MSRP of $70,00, you may choose from black, charcoal, cobalt, heritage teal, lotus blue, or pinon green. With so many colors to pick, travelers may decide to purchase two bags, one for hiking and one for travel. Fill both packs with necessary accessories, zip them up and away and ready to grab and go.

If you are traveling under the stars on the evening trail, or over the clouds by plane, the lumbar series Tour pack has your back. Mountainsmith, producing products with 100% recycled material to protect the Earth, one pack at a time.

By Mary Webb

There is nothing simple about these Sockwell knee-high compression socks, other than they are simply marvelous. We took a hike in the Napa Valley, California region to the Table Rock trail, as well as bike rides in northern California, and found the design of the Sockwell compression socks to be quite upright.

Cold temperatures and rainy weather made me glad to be sporting the Sockwell compression socks in natural color ways. My feet were warm and my calves were well supported on the steep ascents to Table Rock. There are several percentages of various fabrics that are woven together, producing a tubular combination to keep your feet and calves happy.

You supply the labor out on the trail, Sockwell supplies the materials!

Constructed of 32-percent Merino wool, 31-percent Bamboo, 32-percent stretch nylon and six-percent Spandex, the Sockwell compression socks are a myriad of fabrics.

The softness of the Merino wool provides natural temperature and moisture management. This was evident when we wore the Sockwell compression socks on our rode bike training sessions. Moisture was wicked away, and our feet stayed dry and comfortable on the bike trail.

Turn welt keeps the socks from slipping

Bamboo? Yes, Bamboo has natural anti-microbial characteristics that allow the socks to breathe. Odor resistant qualities in the Bamboo will make this sock a champion out on the ski slopes and snow shoeing in the Sequoias.

Stretch nylon fabric works with the Spandex to give you mobility in pulling the socks to your knee. The Sockwell compression socks did not slip down my calves during our hikes in the Napa region. It was such a comfort to have the support of the Spandex throughout the sock, preventing slippage inside our shoes.

There are various Sockwell features sewn into the material to make this sock a performance choice out on the trail: turn welt, arch support, flat toe seams and cushioned soles.

The top of the sock is tucked down inside the sock, this is called a turn welt. The turn welt is an abundance of extra elastic that keeps the socks upright and correct, giving a finished look to your outdoor attire. Speaking of outdoor looks, the Sockwell compression sock is available in colors other than the natural look we chose: bark solid, black solid, black stripe, teal and plum.

An arch support is an added band of spandex sewn into the arch area of the foot. An arch support serves two functions: to provide support to the arch area of the foot and reduce slippage of the sock in your shoe.

The flat toe seams provide comfort, particularly felt as I was clipped into my biking shoes. Nothing can be more unwieldy than a bulky seam along the toes, bunching up against the tip of your shoes.

The cushioned soles were comfortable inside my hiking boots, as well as worn alone. After our long wet hike in Napa, I took off my boots, grabbed some cocoa and put my feet up on the couch. My feet were warm and comfortable and I didn’t want to take the socks off.

When you do decide to peel them off to wash, make sure to turn the socks inside out before you toss them in the machine. Do not use bleach and make sure the dryer is set on a lower temperature. Take good care of these socks, you will want them to be with you for several of your outdoor activities.

Spandex provides comfort in the legs

By Mary Webb

Look no further than the Geopalz Activity tracker for the smaller fresh air junkies in your family. Our six year old tester, Lucy, stepped her way into the world of Geopalz and really enjoyed it! With various characters to choose from, such as a butterfly, Kit the skeleton cat or a ladybug, kids are geared up and ready to explore the great fresh outdoors. Lucy wore the ladybug and enjoyed the remarks she got from other kids in the park.

There are other reasons why Lucy enjoyed the Geopalz tracker, one of them being the free prizes she can accumulate with points. Among the available prizes are water bottles, gift cards and Frisbees, to name a few. Lucy is working towards a new Frisbee. How she became a Geopalz member was simple!

Log on to the Geopalz website, create an account and type in your steps each day. The steps are converted to points; and, after a time, these points accumulate towards prizes. Geopalz enthusiasts can set goals for specific prizes and all that is required is outdoor play to get them!

You can have up to eight Geopalz on one account, and you are able to monitor each one. There is also the ability to create a group with other steppers in your area, if you so choose.

A newer feature that has been added to the Geopalz website is the ability for the whole family to get involved. Time to encourage mom, dad, sister and brother off the couch by recording their weight, activities and even sleep with their favorite Geopalz user.

GeoPalz use 2-D pedometers that tracks users’ steps throughout the day. The units are large enough to show off to friends, but small enough not to get in the way of that important downhill slide run. There are two options for attachment. One is a loop that can fasten to a zippered jacket and another is an attached hook on the back on the unit, allowing Lucy to attach the Geopalz ladybug on her front jean pocket.

Lucy enjoys earning points by stepping with her mom

In addition to certificates that are obtained for high stepping, awards are given if Lucy logs in her steps for five days in a row and/or walks 10,000 steps. Lucy enjoys working towards her goals by walking through the neighborhood with her mom.

Weekly discussions facilitate family interaction in this busy day and age. Emails are sent to parents showing the log in history for the week of the Geopalz use. There is also a graph in this email that shows the average. Parents can get involved in this process and share ideas for exercise.

For an overall family experience, it’s a win win win situation. Improved health, activity, family interaction and prizes! Now, it’s time for Lucy to get stepping to win that Frisbee she has her eye on. Making new friends and encouraging others to become involved is great. Lucy has her sights set high.
By Mary Webb

LOWA’s Renegade series performance boots make traversing dry creeks and jumping rocks a blast! When you’re free spirited, fun mood signals a day hike, the Renegade boots will accommodate an outdoor excursion to the rim rock of Moab or an impromptu jaunt to Sedona. There are many technologies working behind the scenes of these stylish boots. From the outside to the inside, these Renegades are hard at work.

We took a serendipitous hiking trek to Santa Barbara, California. These LOWA Renegade hikers use a full-length stiff nylon shank to provide proper support for the feet. And that stiff shank in the Renegades helped in the challenging boulder scramble we hiked towards the Seven Falls trail.

The advantage of nylon over steel shank is the weight; day hikers such as the Renegade don’t necessitate dealing with a heavy load such as a backpack kitted out for a multi-day trip. A hydropack of water, camera and wheat thins are all we needed to refresh and lounge at the Seven Falls in Santa Barbara. For a price point of $210.00, the Renegade LL Mid WS hiking boots will be a welcome addition to your spur of the moment adventures.

Leather interior and exterior performance boots

Like a hand in glove, our feet fit properly in the leather lining. While other models in LOWA’s Renegade series offer a Gore-Tex lining, such as the men’s Renegade GTX Mid we reviewed earlier this year Renegade GTX mid hiking boot, this leather lined version does not. Stylish and performance driven, the leather lining breathes with you and also deters blisters. Another feature of the new Renegades I enjoyed on this hiking trip was the perforated footbed of the boot. The perforated footbed offers additional breathability for the feet and work with the leather lining.

The leather awoke me to a natural feel of the boot, and the cream white color of the lining was a nice contrast to the exterior coffee-color ways of brown we experienced. Handcrafted in Europe, the Renegade LL Mid WS is a welcome addition to any hiking pant or pair of brand jeans. My feet were wet when I reached the Seven Falls; it wasn’t because of perspiration in the boots, it was from taking off the Renegades to dip my feet into the running water off the cool Santa Barbara rocks.

Midsoles are constructed of a PU Monowrap frame for a reduction in the weight of the boot as well as stabilization. This sure footed design was felt as I made my way on uneven creek bed terrain. Assisting in my sure footedness was the Vibram Evo outsoles. Thick rubber and plenty of traction helped me gain a grip on the crevices of larger rocks, getting me up and over to the next foot hold.

The Vibram Evo outsoles did equally as well on the smaller rocks, sprinkled along the Seven Falls trail. I noticed the difference between my travel partner and I, as I was not slipping as much on the wetter stones.

Ideal for traversing wet rocks along the creek

LOWA’s Renegade boots are wrapped up in Nubuck leather on the exterior. The Nubuck leather is as soft to the touch as the leather lined interior, only a different texture. Nubuck is similar to suede; however, suede is made from the interior leather of the hide and the Nubuck comes from the outside. We encountered quite a bit of water near the falls as one would imagine, Nubuck is water resistant and while the water marks are apparent on this leather, they disappear completely when they become dry.

I like the leather lined tongue on the Renegade boots. There are two strategic pieces of fabric sewn in on the sides of the tongue which allow you easily slip your foot in and out. I felt extra protection along the base of my shin as I made my descent down the steep slope of the falls due the padding of the tongue. Actually, I can give a good report to not only the tongue, but the whole boot! A good thickness of comfort is at your fingertips with LOWA’s Renegade.

Any cowboy renegade knows when to grab a rope and hit the trail; these Renegade boots come with a custom-designed, derby-style lacing system with rope-like nylon laces. Tightening up these laces reminds me of putting on a pair of ski boots, three hooks on either side of the boot allow you to criss-cross your way to the top, keeping your feet snug and secure.

If brown is not the color choice of your outdoor attire, try the stone color that is offered in this fine boot.

Natural elements of contrasting leathers in and out, along with modern day synthetic technologies will liken your experience in LOWA’s Renegade to a wolf on skates; durable and soft, yet able to glide up and down steep terrain. Right out of the box, you will be racing out the gate to experience a northern forest hike or a muddy trail along the eastern coast. And your feet are laced into a solid pair of boots that ranks high in comfort, traction, and durability on many more hikes before and after the Seven Falls trail.

By Mary Webb

Look no further than Tangerine Falls in Santa Barbara for a refreshing hike. This 2.5 round trip hike is a bit challenging and very striking. The wander starts on a level playing field and soon becomes steep in grade, about a 770 foot elevation gain in all. Hiking to Tangerine Falls is moderate in difficulty, particularly near the top.

It is a good idea to wear some good day hiking boots or trail running shoes for this jaunt. The varied terrain coupled with rock hopping along the creek can make for a slippery slope.

There is some poison oak tucked along the boulders; keep in check, especially those nooks where you need proper hand placement, as some rock hugging is in order along the trail.

The splendor along the way will energize your senses and periodic bursts of shade only seek to cool you down on the upward trek. Maiden Hair fern grows naturally along the creek bed and I took delight in the tiny frogs that hopped about with me on the creek bed rocks.

Wild ferns grow along the creekside

As you approach the last of the trail, you will find yourself upon a veil of rocks, limestone to be exact. It was great to finally reach our destination as I shimmied myself up and over the limestone to view the Tangerine Falls!

The Tangerine Falls is named as such because of the years and years of water that have trickled and roared down the great limestone face, creating an orange color embedded in the stone.

The limestone was polished in various locations due to wayward travelers before me. Watch out for the wet limestone, it can be very slick; but with gingerly steps you will have several choices and vantage points to view not only the falls, but an ocean view to the west.

Lovely nooks and creeks entertain you on the descent

This is one of those hikes that offer a good heart pumping work out as well as pristine beauty. You will be entertained along the way by the sounds of crackling creeks, dragon flies and dappled sun. The next time you are in Santa Barbara and want to peel away from the hustle and bustle, check out Tangerine Falls, an outgrowth of adventure!

By Mary Webb

Lilypond’s Switchgrass Carryall Backpack is a versatile hand bag and backpack will take you from the farmer’s market to the bike trail and anywhere in between! We trotted around California last month and I took the Switchgrass for an evening stroll along the Sundial bridge, for the annual Sundial Music Festival as well as a day trip to the Mendocino Coast botanical garden in Fort Bragg. While the Switchgrass is available in the color of sea grass and sea breeze; we chose the vibrant color ways of orange peel and fire dance, just the right colors to play off the moonlight at the sundial bridge and the dahlias at the botanical garden.

It was about a three mile amble from the car to the Sundial Music Festival. With one deep interior zipped pocket, containing a hooked ring for keys, I was able to keep my car keys in an assured location. Not only were they locked on the hook, but zipped up tight! There are 4 additional sewn in interior pockets that were the perfect location to store my bottled water. While temperatures can escalate along the river, it was nice to know that I had some bottles safely stowed to quench my thirst. The dual-roped handles on the bag warded off sweat and were comfortable on my grip, and the 3″ handle strap height allowed sufficient room between my hand and the bag. There were several items for sale at the festival that caught my eye and filled up the Switchgrass! The bag became quite heavy with t-shirts, mugs and jewelry to name a few. I was glad to have the versatility of the backpack to help shoulder some of the load. Adjustable straps were not only functional, but adorned in the Lilypond jacquard webbing. This jacquard webbing is delightfully decorative around the top of tote, providing a stylish motif to the exterior.

Use as a tote or backpack, your choice

Heading out to the coastal garden was a delightful experience in the Switchgrass bag. We perused the perennial garden and took a stroll out along the garden path to the coastal waters; with our light jackets stored inside the denier nylon fabric bag, I enjoyed the look and silky feel of the water-marked interior in a pleasant contrasting green. The open mouth design made it easy to pull items in and out of the bag, and I liked the 2 magnetic closures that kept belongings at bay. The Switchgrass comes with an exterior zippered pocket. I used this pocket to store my maps because a girl needs to know where she’s going. The nylon fabrics make cleaning a breeze in the Switchgrass, simply wipe down with a damp cloth. I had to do this more than once in the garden as I brushed up against a dusty rail or two, attempting a closer glimpse of the gorgeous Dahlias!

Keep the Switchgrass hanging near your front door ladies. For $79, this hand bag is perfect to grab when you are out shopping with a few friends around San Francisco and you need a little extra carrying room; especially when the sales in Union Square may be too hard to resist! This writer will be bike riding to the market more often with the Switchgrass. While this backpack isn’t meant to carry heavy camping gear, it’s perfect for a baguette, tomatoes and some fresh Mozzarella!

National Parks get lots of visitors, but if you want to avoid the common tourist jaunts and challenge yourself on a difficult but rewarding day hike, check out our list of tough trails at the top ten most visited National Parks.

According to the NPS, these 10 National Parks are typically the most visited. But the trails we selected are not always the most popular with tourists and visitors due to their length and climb in elevation. If you’re willing to take them on, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views and a challenging experience that fresh air junkies can appreciate.

Great Smokey Mountains National Park: Ramsey Cascades Trail. An eight mile round trip strenuous hike that climbs over 2,000 ft. in elevation. Offers a spectatular view of the tallest waterfall in the park. Park visits in 2009: (9,491,437).

Grand Canyon National Park : South Kaibab Trail. A steep six mile round trip at the canyon’s South Rim. Offers great views of the park in a well-maintained trail. Trailhead elevation is 7,200 feet. Water is available only at the trailhead. Park visits in 2009: (4,348,049).

Yosemite National Park: Upper Yosemite Falls. A 7.2 mile round trip day hike that climbs up to 2,700 ft. in elevation in a short but steep hike. While other hikers will be clawing to get a day permit for Half Dome, you’ll be enjoying shaded views of the park that are not often seen. Park visits in 2009: (3,737,472).

Yellowstone National Park: Mt. Washburn Trail. This six mile round trip trail takes you up to the top of Mt. Washburn at 10,423 ft. It offers a beautiful panoramic view of the park and the Grand Tetons that most visitors seldom see. Park visits in 2009: (3,295,187).

Olympic National Park: Pyramid Peak Trail. A seven mile round trip hike that gains 2,350 ft. in elevation from dense rain forest to the summit of Pyramid Peak. The hike offers a great way to experience old growth forest and has a panoramic view of Lake Crescent at the top. Park visits in 2009: (3,276,459).

The Upper Yosemite Falls hike is one of the most challenging in this popular park. Photo NPS

Rocky Mountain National Park: Chasm Lake Trail. This 8.4 mile hike is strenuous but offers some of the best views of the park. The trail rises 2,360 ft. in elevation where you’ll see wildflowers and get the best view of Longs Peak. Park visits in 2009: (2,822,325).

Zion National Park: Angels Landing. One of our personal favorites as it is only 2.5 miles round trip, but it rises 1500 ft. in elevation. The trail is paved till you get to Scouts Lookout, where you ascend another 500 ft. up a steep, narrow ridge with chains to Angles Landing. Wear good, sticky shoes. Park visitors in 2009: (2,735,402)

Cuyahoga Valley National Park: Buckeye Trail-Station Road Bridge to Jaite. Although this seven mile trail doesn’t offer much in elevation, only a 200 ft. gain, it is rated as a difficult trail that extends through a large section of the park with scenic views along the way. Park visitors in 2009: (2,589,288)

Grand Teton National Park: Monogram Lake Trail. This incredibly scenic 10-mile round trip hike climbs to 5,400 ft. It offers spectacular wildlife and plant-life along subalpine meadows and alpine glaciation before reaching Monogram Lake. Park visits in 20090: (2,580,081).

Acadia National Park: Cadillac Mountain South Ridge Trail. This strenuous 7.4 mile round trip trail starts in the forest area and rises 3,100 ft. up a gentle ascent on granite. It’s the longest trail in the park and offers some of the best open vistas and chances to see eagles flying overhead. Park visits in 2009: (2,227,698).

Here’s the new Overland Equipment S.E. Bayliss Tote. It is a workhorse disguised in an attractive and compact package, and you might like it too. The ballistic nylon exterior of this sturdy little purse promises durability and versatility. It offers an ergonomic design making it convenient to carry. This S.E. Bayliss tote hugs the body and allows you to be active while still retaining your necessities.

As a carry-all bag, this tote offers three separate compartments to hold your belongings. The front flap pocket has an easy magnetic closure for quick access to items you’ll want right away. It also features a zippered mesh pocket and a handy key clip to keep them safe as you go about your day.

There is a larger main dual-zippered compartment to nix your need for a wallet, with six credit card slots, a pen pocket, and a larger slit pocket for passports or checkbooks. This compartment also offers two fleece-lined pockets to protect a cell phone or camera.

Finally, as if this little Pandora’s Box of a purse didn’t already give you enough homes for your things, there is a large zippered pocket that offers space for bulkier items, or, perhaps, an energy bar to help you charged up.

For the shoulder carry, this Bayliss tote a one inch-strap that is comfortable and adjustable. The strap uses a pressure lock buckle, and the bag can be worn across your body, or as a fanny pack around the waist.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-9047" title="Overland Equipment's S.E.

Although this bag is designed for rugged use and functionality, it keeps the user organized on day trips and sightseeing in town, while still looking fashionable. I preferred slinging this lightweight bag over my shoulder and wearing it close to the hip, confident my belongings were secure. This versatile nylon purse can be toted on dusty trails, or touring distant locales.

The interior sweet vine and bee pattern is an exclusive print. And the contrasting color of the 210 D ripstop nylon lining adds flair and hipness. It seems to have a vintage feel, while reminding the wearer that proceeds go to benefit bee friendly gardens in Chico, California.

For its 30th Anniversary, Overland Equipment is committed to rebuilding the declining bee population. I was instantly charmed by the color of my bag — coined poppy/light denim print, which is a beautifully deep rusty red, with denim blue colored printed lining, but it is also offered in other attractive color combinations. I immediately had the urge to empty everything out of my everyday purse and simplify my life by using this purse day in, and day out!

As an extra bonus, Overland Equipment contributes to a green friendly world by also providing you with a roomy Everyday Shopper bag that can be folded up neatly into a tiny pouch with a caribiner hook that you can conveniently attach to your Bayliss tote for unexpected trips to the grocery store, or purchases while on the go. The shopper is constructed of the pretty vine and bee denim colored fabric, matching the interior of your Bayliss purse.

Though the inside of the S.E. Bayliss has a lofty prettiness, the no nonsense nylon and ripcord stylings of the exterior promise to make this purse a trusty companion in the great outdoors. The well-designed, curved shape of the bag make it feel cosmopolitan and worthy of someone who doesn’t have the time to lug around unnecessary items as they explore! This little gem has all the room you need for necessities, while managing to look sleek and pulled together. Throw it over your shoulder, and get ready to roam the world.
