Our trip to the Mt. Shasta Ski Park promised to be a hit from the start. Weather conditions were pristine for a winter’s day, with blue skies and plenty of snow to play with. Recent snow storms had delivered a good couple inches of snow in previous days, and tall pine trees still gracefully boasted snow covered limbs. It was a glorious sight wherever one set their gaze.

Winter beauty laced with fresh snow beckons some folks to figure out a way to play all day in it, and that’s what we intended to do. We had a couple pieces of gear to evaluate, but that was part of the fun.

Mount Shasta is the geographical reference point for many northern Californians, particularly in the winter. This great white

landmark beckons outdoor enthusiasts, especially skiers and snowboarders, to visit Mount Shasta Ski Park. The park is located off Highway 89, southeast of Lake Siskiyou. Shasta Ski Park is a popular destination point for the surrounding communities of Redding, Yreka, Chico and the like. Starting our morning in Redding, it was a breathtaking view driving up to Mount Shasta, along side the great arms of Lake Shasta along Interstate-5.

Turning onto Highway 89, Mount Shasta leaps out at you. Seeing the majesty of the mountain built up excitement for the day of skiing ahead of us. Pulling into the parking lot of the Mt. Shasta ski park, the energy started coursing through our collective veins. On the slopes above, you can get a sense of how many options the day might present. It was a day with relatively light crowds, but the slopes had just about the right amount of activity for you to want to hurry up and join them.

We hit it on the mark with the weather. It was 66 degrees where the blue skies greeted us at the entrance to the park and stayed with us the entire day. After getting the lay of the land and a map of the slopes, we began to route our morning runs. As so many you avid skiers may know, it is important to warm up to the steeper slopes, no matter your skill level. So we headed over to the Marmot Lift, where several easy slopes are laid out for stretching the legs and getting the blood going before tackling more challenging runs. At the Marmot Lift, we spotted the learning center for children and adults.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-6557 " title="Mt.
Shasta Snow Kids are for Skiers ages five to nine and various ski packages are available, which may include lessons, rentals and lift tickets. During the lessons, children board a moving conveyor belt up to a small mountain where they practice their turning and stopping under the guidance of an instructor. Skiers and Snowboarders ages 10 and up may participate in the Jr. and Adult lesson classes. Packages are available in this age group as well. In addition, Shasta Ski Park offers lessons in Freestyle, Telemark, and Senior’s Specialty Clinics, just to name a few.

Having this school of knowledge under our belt, we proceeded in line at the Marmot Lift to begin our morning warm up. Up here, the views were breath taking as we hovered over snow and trees below us. As we made our final ascent into Marmot Ridge, we had a few minutes to review our map. The runs are color coded by level of difficulty, and we knew we would start out with the green designated slopes, as they were the easiest.

Guess which run we chose? The Fresh Air route of course, and it was a great choice! Nice wide open lane and plenty of powder. It’s always a confidence builder to loosen up the limbs and cardiovascular system with a couple warm up runs down the slopes of easy street. And by then, we were ready for steeper, deeper, and more demanding snow runs. With a breath of fresh air for us junkies, we decided to make our way over to Douglas Butte lift, taking us to an elevation level of 6600 feet.

Exiting Douglas Butte presented gorgeous tree-lined borders. Moss covered trees surrounded the steep commencement into

<img class="size-medium wp-image-6566" title="Shasta Ski Park, moss on trees.
Highlands Glide, an intermediate, blue colored designation course. Spraying the trees in our tracks, we discovered another lift half-way down the slope. This lift we eyeballed half-way down the Douglas Butte run is known as Coyote Butte, located at an elevation of 6,880 feet. Coyote Butte is the current apex of the Mt. Shasta Ski Park. And what a vantage point! It was pure 360 degrees of amazing countryside for as far as the eyes can see. This top-view included a glimpse of Lake Siskiyou off in the distance.

Oh yes, the ski conditions were fantastic and the weather was more than kind in its perfection. When skiing on a clear day with the sun soaking your flesh with UV rays, life can seem like it’s on the good side of super fun, and surreal in many respects. But we all know how important it is to apply good sun block and skin protection for your face and exposed skin, especially when you have youngsters along the trip, and off doing their own snowboarding and skiing adventures.

Down the Diamond

Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, especially on this warm user-friendly ski park day! We were past easy, and decided to take the Z-way down. All the black diamond way down! Now then, we jetted all the way to the lodge where we were met with a veggie burger and a well needed beverage at the Coyote Grill.

Coyote Grill at Mt. Shasta Ski Park. Good food, fun staff.

Reasonably priced and delicious, the fastidious staff at the Coyote Grill didn’t keep us off the slopes too long. Plenty of outdoor seating presented an opportunity to visit with fellow downhill enthusiasts as we nourished our slope thirsty souls.

Diamond runs are a benchmark for evaluating the performance of ski equipment once there is confidence the gear is good for more. In this case, this writer had a pair of Solomon Women’s Idol 8 ski boots buckled to her feet. Nice! These Solomon Idol 8’s permitted us to be as aggressive as a fourth-quarter work week, or as laid back as a Californian on Grammy night. Either way, the fun factor is only a matter of how far you want to twist the dial between one and 11. The Idol 8’s went from the warm up runs of Mt. Shasta Ski Park to the double-down black diamond runs with grace.

Armed with a full tank of gas, we set out to get in as many runs as possible. Coyote Butte was this writer’s favorite however, and we were soaring down Eagles Flight for the better part of the remaining day.

When the sun winked from behind the trees in the late afternoon, it was time to say farewell to Shasta Ski Park for the moment. A

<img class="size-medium wp-image-6565" title="Shasta Ski Park working cabin.
day of fun is often balanced out by those deadlines and commitments we all live with. This wasn’t a vacation day, it wasn’t a holiday, it was a snow day that promised great snow and tons of fun. So that’s how it ended, with a car full of exhausted souls who were already plotting how they might get back soon. With the evening shadows drifting into the canyons and valleys around Mt. Shasta Ski Park, and that looming giant of Mt. Shasta itself glowing in the last rays of the day, we reflected just a little more.

With the setting of the sun, our thoughts turned to visions of night skiing which is also available at the park. Various ski runs offer night lighting and are designated on the Shasta Park Ski map. With an evening sky filled with stars in the Shasta region, we are penciling in this evening adventure on our future travels to the northern region of California.

About Mt. Shasta Ski Park

Mt. Shasta Ski Park provides more than 400 acres of ski loving terrain. About 25 percent of the mountain is geared for advanced skiers and 25 percent delegated for intermediate skiers. That leaves about 20 percent of the mountain set aside for learning how to ski. With 32 ski trails to choose from, there is lots of space to find your own line down your favorite run.

The longest downhill run is almost two miles long (1.75 miles) and there is a Super Halfpipe 300 feet long for snowboarders to romp on. The lifts have a total capacity of 618 seats, so you’re bound to have tons of opportunity to get in as many runs as you can on the Douglas, Coyote, and Marmot lifts; all with three-wide seating.

Mt. Shasta Ski Park gets about 275 inches of annual snowfall. So you can expect to enjoy great conditions with a ski-lift staff of knowledgeable and helpful staff who want you to have a blast. And they work there so they can ski there, so you automatically have a common thread with most of the ski park workers you might run into, or not.

Napa Valley is known for its exceptional wineries and breathtaking vineyard views, but not many people know about the amazing hikes that surround the swirling of glasses and fruits of the vine. Napa Valley offers stupendous hikes in Westwood Hills Park, Skyline Wilderness, and the Robert Louis Stevenson State Park, for starters.

We chose the Robert Louis Stevenson State Park, north of the Ink House Inn, to explore the Table Rock trail. It was a rainy day for hiking. With all the creature comforts awaiting us back at the Ink House, we set out to discover the views and geological formations that embrace the Table Rock trail.

Table Rock trail extends a little more than two miles from the trailhead to the peak. The hike was a series of switchbacks and vistas of Mount Saint Helena. Steep grades were challenging in the rain, but we trudged the mud in pursuit of splendid views and scenery. Moss covered trees and fungi met us above and below the trail as we approached the last leg of our ascent. It was here were able to form our opinion on the rocks, and we decided it was a pleasure to experience Napa from this perspective.

Back at the Ink House we received a warm welcome via antique furnishings, stained glass and crystal chandeliers. One need only survey the parlor to experience the richness of the inn. From the wallpaper up to the ceilings and down to the floors, the parlor sets the stage of more to come.

Looking to the beautiful Syrah vineyard and olive orchards immediately surrounding the Ink House it is difficult to imagine the time in 1884, when Theron H. Ink built the inn, this land was once a duck farm. As a matter of fact, for Ink to construct the building, he had to channel the pond water out with thousands of French drain tiles. Not a small feat by any means.

Currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places, Ink, along with his wife and children, occupied the inn until his passing at age 62. Near the antique pump organ, a photograph of Ink serves as a honored memento and one of only a few photographs known to exist. The Ink House also has a scrapbook of pictures and newspaper clippings of the inn’s history. We enjoyed finding a soft spot on the parlor sofa with a glass of wine and appetizers, offered at the inn in the early evening, and revisited some amazing events that have occurred in this historical home.

One such memorable experience was the filming of Wild in the Country near the Ink House, where Elvis Presley was the star of this 1961 feature film. Wild in the Country was shot in the Napa Valley territory, in and around the town of Saint Helena, but principally shot near the Ink House. Presley decided to reside in the French room at the Ink House during the workings of the film. The French room, along with other time-styled rooms at the inn, offers the perfect mix of modern amenities and time period motifs. All rooms provide heating, air conditioning and wireless internet access, as well as a private full bathroom.

A birds-eye view of the parlor

The French room at the inn has been voted one of top 100 places to kiss in the nation. Guests are encouraged to book this room well in advance, as honeymooners, as well as love interests, fill the room quickly. There is a copy of the Wild in the Country movie, available upon request, for guests to gain a glimpse of “The King” and the Napa Valley surroundings as they existed more than 50 years ago.

We stayed in the Harvest room at the inn. The room was restful and pleasant with dappled sun cheering our spirits against the paned window. With a sitting area off the side, it was here we sipped a glass of dessert wine purchased on an earlier jaunt to a local winery. Along the hallways of the second floor, where most of the rooms are situated, beautiful tapestries adorn the walls, working with the wood floors to provide a sense of warmth throughout. We opted not to have a television, but some rooms offer one, as well as a mini-bar if you so choose.

The Ink House is ideally located along State Route 29 for a day of tasting on the town. Whitehall Lane Winery, Rutherford Grove, and the Alpha Omega Winery are just a few samplings of the numerous tasting options available to guests. The Ink House graciously distributes VIP tasting passes to some of the immediate surrounding tasting room locations, made up of the regional varietals in the Napa Valley region.

St. Helena wine grape varietals establish their roots in a gravely-clay soil with low fertility and moderate water retention. St. Helena is known for their Cabernet Sauvignon, but there are also some very good Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Syrah, Viognier and Zinfandel varietals being grown.

Another popular attraction to Ink House visitors is the Napa Valley Wine Train. The train is operated by the Napa Valley Railroad, a privately operated train that runs between Napa and St. Helena, California. This train passes the towns of Yountville, Rutherford and Oakville.

The blue room is popular with guests

You will want to make sure you start the day of tasting and excursions well fed, and you will get just that at the Ink House, gourmet style! Fresh-baked aromas of pumpkin and spice filled the parlor on our weekend visit. Steaming egg dishes and fresh orange juice pair up the bread and it was delightful to visit with guests from various regions of the nation while enjoying fresh blueberries, raspberries and cream. If you happen, on occasion the Chef-innkeeper prepares a signature Bella Torta that will entice your taste buds. The breakfast was scrumptious, and as coffee is filled, guests pour over the striking views of Napa Valley.

A fantastic way to view St. Helena vineyards and the surrounding hillside landscapes is in the Observatory room at the Ink House. The Observatory, reconstructed in 1984, is perched a good 50 feet off of the parlor level. Surrounded by 360-degree vantages, through glass windows, you need only clutch a pair of binoculars and discover your newly gained perspective of the region. I enjoyed relaxing on the settee and watching the sun descend behind the mountains before taking off to Yountville for dinner.

If you are game for it, you can also head to the basement at the opposite end of the observatory. Here you will find a pool table, poker table, darts and piano. If the weather permits, the Ink House has bicycles you are free to use also. You can pack a snack and hop on a couple bikes along the roadside for some exercise near vineyard floors.

A pair of binoculars help focus on the flowers

Napa Valley experiences many days of gorgeous sunshine throughout the year. This is one of the reasons the Ink House and its manicured lawns are a popular place for weddings. The barn and carriage house, also built in 1884, are a charming back drop for photo shoots of the bride and groom. Guests take pleasure in the horseshoe pitch and croquet course when fine weather obliges.

The Ink House is also a popular choice among engaged couples to house their wedding parties. There is a room built downstairs, once a second parlor, stylishly renovated to accommodate guests who may not be able to access the second floor rooms.

Holidays are a nice time to visit the quaint town of St. Helena. With restaurants, shops and spas, the tree-lined streets through town make this a quaint destination point of travel. The Ink House offers holidays specials during the Christmas season for you and yours.

Retreat, treat and re-treat yourself to the luxuries of the Ink House inn. With seasonal distinctions in the region, you will enjoy the treasures to be had from the golden vineyards of the fall to the yellow setting sun of summer.

Enjoy Utah’s red rock formations without the National Park crowds in Snow Canyon State Park.

Located in St. George, Utah, Snow Canyon State Park offers beautiful views of Utah’s red rock and other unique formations that are visible along 18 miles of hiking trails, rock climbing routes, biking, horseback riding and campgrounds that are open all year long.

With a name like Snow Canyon, you wouldn’t think it’s a warm place to visit in the winter, but winter is probably the best time to enjoy the park, as it’s located in the south western portion of the state that offers relief from the colder temperatures of the north.

The park was established in 1959 and was originally named Dixie Canyon. Later the name was changed to honor prominent Utah pioneers, Lorenzo and Eratus Snow. Pioneers entering into the area in the 1850’s wrote their names on the red rock canyon walls with axle grease, much of which is still visible today.

Anasazi and Paiute Indians also inhabited the area, but the Canyon’s most prominent history comes from the variety of movies that have been filmed there. These include Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Jeremiah Johnson and The Electric Horseman, that propose the area may have been a favorite spot for actor Robert Redford.

Early Mormon pioneers wrote their names on one of the cliff faces with axle grease.

Along the 7,400 acre park, Navajo sandstone dominates the skyline but other features such as petrified sand dunes and lava flows are also visible and add to the beauty of the park. The wildlife is abundant and you’ll probably see a variety of small lizards and snakes, but the area is also home to gila monsters and tortoises that often draw a crowd or can cross the road at any time.

Rock jocks will enjoy the 170 climbing routes in the park, but some are closed in the summer when temperatures can rise into the 100’s. The ranger can supply you with maps, climbing route locations and additional information.

The area is also great for family bike rides, especially along the Whip Tail Trail, which is a six mile paved road that runs parallel to the main road through the park, but offers better views.

Most of the hiking trails are short and moderate, but many are in gravel and sand. So it’s a good idea to make sure you use proper hiking boots as sand can easily get into low-top sneakers and cause you lots of discomfort during your hike. Another must see is the Johnson Canyon trail. It’s a short 2 miles but it’s closed from March thru October so it’s best to visit it during the winter where you can walk through lava flows and red rock to end up at a spectacular natural arch that spans across 200 ft.

Snow Canyon has 33 campgrounds with water and electric-hook ups for trailers and several tent and group campsites too. The facilities also include showers , drinking water and a sewage disposal station. Park rangers recommend making reservations a minimum of two days in advance and up to 16 weeks in advance from park check-out dates. Group reservations can be made up to 11 months in advance. For more information, visit www.stateparks.utah.gov or call (435) 628-2255.

Are you ready to get away–far away–from the stresses of the modern world? If so, step back in time and journey to Hogan Cabin in Wisdom, MT. Far off the beaten track, this one-room log cabin provides primitive shelter for outdoor enthusiasts who desire a rustic home base for recreation.

Hogan Cabin can be accessed from Highway 43, 25 miles west of Wisdom, Montana by three different access routes. We traveled to the cabin on our way home from visiting relatives in Hamilton, Montana, at the end of August, and used Trail Creek Road #106.

Trail Creek Road is six miles of flat dirt road that meanders through wild flower covered meadows, brief wooded copses and past wide vistas that showcase the true beauty of the Montana wilderness. Though at summer’s end we were able to drive directly in, be ready to snowmobile or cross country ski to the cabin in the winter months.

Another possible route to the cabin, Shoofly Trail #101B, begins at the Highway 43 chain-up parking lot at

Interior of Hogan Cabin with wood stove and basic cooking hardware.

Richardson Creek, and is the shortest, but the most strenuous route. It is not recommended for use in heavy snow by inexperienced skiers.

Wands, or snow markers, lead the way in the snow, and blue diamonds in the wooded areas. Due to the difficulty of this trail, it is not the route of choice for snowmobiles. Chief Joseph Nordic Ski Trails is the third possible trail-head shared by snowmobiles and skiers. All three accesses and trails are explained in detail on the Recreation.gov website.

We could see Hogan Cabin in the distance as we rounded bends in the road. Nestled in a far off meadow, its slanted roof peeks out inviting you to head further into the wilderness, and further away from civilization. I started feeling like Laura Ingalls, heading home after a day in town.

Hoping to have the area to ourselves, we were a little disappointed to see two motor homes parked in the meadow right outside the split rail fence that welcomes you to the cabin. Off the beaten path, but apparently not entirely exclusive! The nice thing is, you can head in and close the wood gate behind you. The other visitors were friendly though, so we got over it quickly, and headed down the drive to check out the digs.

The cabin was built in the 1920’s and originally served as field quarters for state and federal forest workers and fire crews. Charmingly rustic, this cabin is one room, and does not have any electricity or running water. Watch your head as you pass the threshold of the door—the roof line is low. Upon entering you will see four bunk beds to your right and a wood stove to your left. There is a very small table, chairs, and a propane stove.

Firewood is stocked along with essential supplies.

Amenities provided for you are firewood (there is also a barn stocked with firewood behind the cabin, in case you find yourself needing more), pots and pans, wooden bunk beds with pads, a shovel, ax, a lantern, bucket, and dishes.

You are responsible for packing in your own propane canister, bedding, food and toilet paper, and any other necessities, such as matches, garbage bags, or flashlights. Come prepared. Staying here is one small step away from camping! These are rugged accommodations—the toilet is in an outhouse, so be prepared to bundle up for midnight runs in the snowy months!

Outside the cabin is a fire pit surrounded by benches, perfect for roasting hot dogs, or marshmallows, and telling campfire stories late into the starry nights. We enjoyed sitting outside the cabin, listening to the wind blow through the pines, reading the log entries from previous visitors to the cabin, while the kids splashed and played at the little creek that passes about a hundred yards from the site.

Later we hiked through the tall grasses, loosely following one of the trails, surrounded by clouds of white butterflies which my son gleefully caught and released. We kept our eyes open for wildlife, but only encountered insects and frogs in the marshy grasses. Keep your eyes open and you may spot deer, bear, moose, or other wildlife.

Hogan Cabin is a charming retreat, a respite for relaxing and connecting with nature, and a simpler way of life. Visit in the summer and enjoy hiking the lovely meadows, or trek out in the winter months and bring all of your snow toys, ready for adventure and exercise in the great outdoors. Play in the snow all day, then hunker down in the little one-room cabin warmed by the wood stove and good company, as the snowflakes fall fast outside the window.

Weller House Inn is located in Fort Bragg, Mendocino County, a section of Northern California coastline with spectacular beauty and ocean views. It’s a cozy coastal experience for travelers looking to take in some breath taking sights, experience some new activities, or take a reprieve from inland summer weather.

So if you are looking for a destination to just hang out and soak up the coastal beauty, The Weller House is a good place to start. Owned and operated by Vivien LaMothe, the Weller House was built in 1886. Weller House holds the distinction of being the third home built in the immediate Fort Bragg area. This inn is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and has been fully restored to its Victorian architecture.

Crisp Linen are relaxing for guests

This inn offers nine thoughtfully decorated suites for wayward travelers to enjoy the climatic culture of the northern California coastline. In addition to the seven suites in the main house, you’ll find two more suite options in an adjacent historical water tower called the Abalone Tower; so named for the abundance of Red Abalone that comprise the coastal waters off of Mendocino County.

The Abalone Tower features the Heather and Raven rooms. At the Abalone tower, guests will have a short ascent up the tower stairs to discover the highest point of Fort Bragg. These rooms are available for the night, weekend or for extended periods as well. We enjoyed the panoramic view of the ocean and the charming, colorful-historic homes that dot the town.

On one occasion, we were pleasantly surprised to be sipping our coffee and hear the Skunk Train roll through town. The Skunk Train had its beginnings as a logging transporter for the Mendocino redwood logging industry in the early days. Today the train offers passenger transportation and train-events to entertain you. It was so fun to see enthusiastic train passengers wave to us as we were perched at the top of the Abalone Tower. And it was at this vantage point we were also able to view the little brown house on the corner across the street which was rumored to have been a wedding gift from Mr. Weller to his child.

Coastal views are enjoyed along the Mendocino cliffs

We enjoyed our Midsummer room on the second floor of the main house. The room was fittingly named as it was fresh as a midsummer day upon entering the suite. You may appreciate the little touches, such as floral bouquets in the sitting area and crisp, white linen curtains adorning the windows. This room has a claw foot tub in the bathroom. Other rooms have claw foot tubs as well, and all rooms come with a full bath. Some rooms are available with fire places that come in handy during the winter season.

No matter the occasion for your visit to the Weller House, you will find the perfect room for you. Honeymooners may want to stay in the Aqua room with a Jacuzzi whirl-pool bath for two, or perhaps the Lotus room with its Asian-inspired motifs and fixtures to gear you up for an evening of Thai food in town.

Ms. Vivien is constantly adding unique furniture pieces, linens and curtains to the suites; such as a rotating martini table she recently added to one of the Abalone Tower rooms. We were impressed with the enthusiasm Vivien has for the inn, and the ideas she continually implements to inspire her guests.

A cool coastal breeze stirred our taste buds as we dressed for an evening of appetizers on the town. We took a walk and found a pub called Piaci Pub and Pizzeria. It was packed inside and we enjoyed some nice stuffed mushrooms and a glass of Sangiovese. It was a nice way to acclimate ourselves to the friendly, quaint town of Fort Bragg. We didn’t stay out too late, as our delectable breakfast would be ready at 9:00 the next morning.

Fresh eggs are on the list of breakfast ingredients

Breakfast is vital to any adventurous day, and we were greeted by Vivien and fresh coffee near the kitchen. We loved how Vivien incorporates organic ingredients in her breakfast at the inn. She uses fresh, local ingredients from local vendors to provision the kitchen. The fresh bread we browned in the toaster was from a local baker. I spread on grapefruit compote that Vivien made herself, and it was divine!

Keeping with the strategy of using fresh food, the hens Vivien recently acquired are now producing eggs, and Vivien will prepare them for you any style you fancy. We chose scrambled eggs and while we waited, Vivien presented us with fresh baked scones.

Guests often enjoy nearby Glass Beach and we enjoyed the vase collection at the Weller House that were procured from there. Original blue glass from the beach sets the stage for the heirloom sweet peas that adorn the vases and the yard at the inn. For any of you who have been to Glass Beach, you know what a treasure it is to find a vase in its entirety. However, Glass Beach is now a State Park and the glass must remain on the beach, making it all the more special to view at the inn.

All dressed and ready to go, we headed for the Cabrillo Light House , located about nine miles south of the Weller House Inn. We couldn’t have picked a better day to visit the Cabrillo Light House, as there was a tour taking place. At the entrance, we were greeted by folks from the Coast Guard Auxiliary who were passionate to share the history and charm of Point Cabrillo.

Footed tubs are popular among guests

There are three levels of the lighthouse, and each level offers an historical prospective. The lighthouse is 102 years old with the original lens still in operation. Before electricity, the lighthouse was run on kerosene. Lighthouse keepers needed to man the lens around the clock in these days, so little cottages were constructed to house the workers along the bordered path to the light house. The history and views from the top of Point Cabrillo are outstanding. This lighthouse is one you need to make a point of seeing when you come and visit the Weller House Inn.

Fort Bragg offered a ton of sun and vistas for this writer. And we were glad we chose this dazzling day to visit the Mendocino-Coast Botanical Gardens. The gardens boast a multitude of seasonal flowers. With a bottle of water and garden maps in hand, we set out to view the flowers that were in full bloom for August-October. After taking the garden trail to the cliffs along the ocean, we made our way back to discover heritage roses, fuchsias and cactus. These were all delightful, but my favorite was the Dahlia garden, with the warm and cool colors of the color wheel, we were spinning with amazement to see them all! Flowers on the must see list when you visit the Weller House for the holidays include Late perennials, winter heathers, camellias, and wild mushrooms.

We enjoyed the intermittent garden statues along the way towards the little shop near the entrance; not only are you able to buy small plants that are found in the garden, but there are other trinkets such as stationary, wind chimes and books that are available for sale.

Speaking of books, there are plenty of them at the Weller House. Strategic book cases are fixed upon several walls throughout the inn, filled with wonderful vintage books. Grab a blanket, book and cranny and escape to another world at the Weller House.

We decided to enjoy a book up in the dance hall and it was our good fortune to discover the evening pairing of wine and cheese that Vivien presents to her guests out in the foray. Settling in upon a collection of essays by Montaigne and a glass of Merlot, I found a delightful spot on a window seat and enjoyed the relaxation after a long day of sampling Fort Bragg activities.

A Breakfast room full or organic food await you at the inn

As I enjoyed the cheese and crackers, the redwood dance floor was speaking to me and I had to answer it! A piano caught my eye in the corner of the dance hall and I shimmied my way over to the keys; alas, all I had in my fingers were Chop Sticks and the theme to Bat Man.

But there is hope for good music, especially in 2012. The Weller house is going to celebrate 124 years of the Inn’s existence by counting down the decades! It all starts in January, on the last Saturday evening of the month from 8:00-11:00 PM. Dancing and food from that designated decade will be played to represent the time periods. If you need a little leg up before the event, you can participate in one of the dance classes being offered right before the occasion from 7:00-8:00 in the evening to help polish up your moves.

Throughout the year, this great dance hall also hosts a wide range of events. In keeping with the spirit of Mr. Weller, the dance hall is once again used as a community center. Vivien offers the use of her dance hall for Tango events, Pilates, Yoga and Spanish/English Learners Club, to name a few. There are annual events that take place as well, one in particular is the annual Fort Bragg garden club; the Weller house works with the club to put on their annual tea for the award winning entry.

Redwood dance floor is a platform for tango!

You will be well-rested in this great Victorian Weller House Inn. With several bike events and garden activities in Mendocino County, you will be refreshed and inspired. Yes, do bring your bikes when you come to visit the Weller House. With virtually no traffic up along Stewart Street, you will enjoy riding your bike to Glass Beach or anywhere in between. Stop to have lunch at a cafe in town or just park along the wooden trestle for a quick drink of the sun.

‎In keeping with the quote I read in the essays by Montaigne, “Love is an effort to form a friendship inspired by beauty.” The Weller House Inn is the perfect place to meet new friends along ocean cliffs and garden strolls, and love is evident among the whispers in the redwood dance floor and the cool breeze from the north.

By Mary Webb

Look no further than Tangerine Falls in Santa Barbara for a refreshing hike. This 2.5 round trip hike is a bit challenging and very striking. The wander starts on a level playing field and soon becomes steep in grade, about a 770 foot elevation gain in all. Hiking to Tangerine Falls is moderate in difficulty, particularly near the top.

It is a good idea to wear some good day hiking boots or trail running shoes for this jaunt. The varied terrain coupled with rock hopping along the creek can make for a slippery slope.

There is some poison oak tucked along the boulders; keep in check, especially those nooks where you need proper hand placement, as some rock hugging is in order along the trail.

The splendor along the way will energize your senses and periodic bursts of shade only seek to cool you down on the upward trek. Maiden Hair fern grows naturally along the creek bed and I took delight in the tiny frogs that hopped about with me on the creek bed rocks.

Wild ferns grow along the creekside

As you approach the last of the trail, you will find yourself upon a veil of rocks, limestone to be exact. It was great to finally reach our destination as I shimmied myself up and over the limestone to view the Tangerine Falls!

The Tangerine Falls is named as such because of the years and years of water that have trickled and roared down the great limestone face, creating an orange color embedded in the stone.

The limestone was polished in various locations due to wayward travelers before me. Watch out for the wet limestone, it can be very slick; but with gingerly steps you will have several choices and vantage points to view not only the falls, but an ocean view to the west.

Lovely nooks and creeks entertain you on the descent

This is one of those hikes that offer a good heart pumping work out as well as pristine beauty. You will be entertained along the way by the sounds of crackling creeks, dragon flies and dappled sun. The next time you are in Santa Barbara and want to peel away from the hustle and bustle, check out Tangerine Falls, an outgrowth of adventure!

Challenge yourself on one of these strenuous and breath-gasping day hikes in the top ten most visited National Parks

National Parks get lots of visitors, but if you want to avoid the common tourist jaunts and challenge yourself on a difficult but rewarding day hike, check out our list of tough trails at the top ten most visited National Parks.

According to the NPS, these 10 National Parks are typically the most visited. But the trails we selected are not always the most popular with tourists and visitors due to their length and climb in elevation. If you’re willing to take them on, you’ll be rewarded with stunning views and a challenging experience that fresh air junkies can appreciate.

Great Smokey Mountains National Park: Ramsey Cascades Trail. An eight mile round trip strenuous hike that climbs over 2,000 ft. in elevation. Offers a spectatular view of the tallest waterfall in the park. Park visits in 2009: (9,491,437).

Grand Canyon National Park : South Kaibab Trail. A steep six mile round trip at the canyon’s South Rim. Offers great views of the park in a well-maintained trail. Trailhead elevation is 7,200 feet. Water is available only at the trailhead. Park visits in 2009: (4,348,049).

Yosemite National Park: Upper Yosemite Falls. A 7.2 mile round trip day hike that climbs up to 2,700 ft. in elevation in a short but steep hike. While other hikers will be clawing to get a day permit for Half Dome, you’ll be enjoying shaded views of the park that are not often seen. Park visits in 2009: (3,737,472).

Yellowstone National Park: Mt. Washburn Trail. This six mile round trip trail takes you up to the top of Mt. Washburn at 10,423 ft. It offers a beautiful panoramic view of the park and the Grand Tetons that most visitors seldom see. Park visits in 2009: (3,295,187).

Olympic National Park: Pyramid Peak Trail. A seven mile round trip hike that gains 2,350 ft. in elevation from dense rain forest to the summit of Pyramid Peak. The hike offers a great way to experience old growth forest and has a panoramic view of Lake Crescent at the top. Park visits in 2009: (3,276,459).

The Upper Yosemite Falls hike is one of the most challenging in this popular park. Photo NPS

Rocky Mountain National Park: Chasm Lake Trail. This 8.4 mile hike is strenuous but offers some of the best views of the park. The trail rises 2,360 ft. in elevation where you’ll see wildflowers and get the best view of Longs Peak. Park visits in 2009: (2,822,325).

Zion National Park: Angels Landing. One of our personal favorites as it is only 2.5 miles round trip, but it rises 1500 ft. in elevation. The trail is paved till you get to Scouts Lookout, where you ascend another 500 ft. up a steep, narrow ridge with chains to Angles Landing. Wear good, sticky shoes. Park visitors in 2009: (2,735,402)

Cuyahoga Valley National Park: Buckeye Trail-Station Road Bridge to Jaite. Although this seven mile trail doesn’t offer much in elevation, only a 200 ft. gain, it is rated as a difficult trail that extends through a large section of the park with scenic views along the way. Park visitors in 2009: (2,589,288)

Grand Teton National Park: Monogram Lake Trail. This incredibly scenic 10-mile round trip hike climbs to 5,400 ft. It offers spectacular wildlife and plant-life along subalpine meadows and alpine glaciation before reaching Monogram Lake. Park visits in 20090: (2,580,081).

Acadia National Park: Cadillac Mountain South Ridge Trail. This strenuous 7.4 mile round trip trail starts in the forest area and rises 3,100 ft. up a gentle ascent on granite. It’s the longest trail in the park and offers some of the best open vistas and chances to see eagles flying overhead. Park visits in 2009: (2,227,698).

Cinque Terre, a place under the sun and over the sea where travelers can experience not only a taste of Italy, but a huge bite! Whether by boat, foot, or train, the five villages of Monterosso, Vernazza , Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore promise something for everyone! Add shopping and sightseeing on your list for the day; oh, and don’t forget lunch, spectacular views of the Mediterranean Sea and mouth-watering food await you at any one of the 5 village locations.

Originating from Southern California we decided to travel South. Starting at the most northern village of Monterosso, we pursued a coffee and looked out over the bay before we set out on our southerly hike amongst the villages. We watched several travelers lining up on a liner to spend the day out on the ocean, gaining an alternate perspective of Italy. An interesting viewpoint of history at this junction are the World War II Nazi pillbox bunkers, carved into the side of the mountain by the bay.

For a small fee, you may purchase a ticket to traverse the trails of the Cinque Terre. The Monterosso portion of the hike is the most challenging. Staring at the stairs, we began our ascent into the upper most region of the village. Move over stair master, this is the most difficult portion of the hike; make sure you have on a proper pair of tennis shoes and ample bottles of water. Intermittently between the paved steps are level pauses of reprieve, luscious scenery and ocean views. Grapevines dotted the hillside at various turns and twists. The vines were expertly manicured and I enjoyed imagining the daily hike of a conscientious vineyard worker, tending to their care.

Vineyards dot the hillsides

Approaching the next Villa of Vernazza of our 2.5 mile hike was surreal! Having tuckered our calves and legs, we still had a dance in our step as we were greeted by 2 musicians! On their sax and accordion, they serenaded our descent into the picturesque view of Vernazza. It was here we were ready for a dip in the Mediterranean and a nice leisurely lunch at Al Castello.

More steps awaited us to the Al Castello restaurant, but we didn’t mind. The view at the top was stunning. This writer had the fresh shrimp; local fresh produce accompanied the sea food and fresh loaves of bread came in droves. Not a tomato was left unturned as we looked out upon the Mediterranean Sea, deciding upon our diving location underneath the terrace.

Good thing we went light on the salt at lunch, there was plenty of it in the Mediterranean! The jump in the ocean was exhilarating, made me feel a connection to this special spot on the globe. We also felt somewhat at home in talking to other swimmers, as many were from the United States. Some in our group decided to check out the Santa Margherita di Antiochia church, a quaint and beautiful building built in the 1300’s.

Locked in Love

As we bid good bye to Vernazza, we found out soon enough that the trail to Cornigia, the third village, was closed. Recent rains washed away the dirt, making it unsafe to travel. We discovered the Cinque Terre hike was a part of the National Park of Italy. The fee we paid to partake in the hike will go towards reconstruction of this trail to Cornigia, as well as maintenance for the surrounding trail systems.

To the train! We decided upon hitting up the forth village of Manarola for a gelato and some grocery shopping. Renting a farm house in Vicchio afforded me the opportunity to use the wood burning stove and vintage range. I located some home made pesto and striped pasta at a local market to satisfy my travel partners that evening. With shopping bags in tow and a full stomach, it was time to take the trail to the fifth and last village, Riomaggiore.

The trail from Manarola to Riomaggiore is love-locked. All along the gates and fences are locks; some old and some knew, as sweethearts confess their undying love to each other against the sea. While the origination of this tradition remains unsettled, we enjoyed the creativity of the individuals. The locks are artwork in and among themselves along the beautiful scenic walkways.

Ending our hike through Riomaggiore was pleasant and low-key. I was glad we chose to start with the most challenging portion of the hike in Monterosso and ease our pace into the Riomaggiorian sunset. It was here a “pizza parlor” caught our eye; and as we sat down with the exquisite table wine and reminisced of our amazing day, we all decided… this pizza had the merriest marinara this side of Italy!

Looking for a fun “day-cation” for the whole family? A visit to Eagle Island State Park in Eagle, Idaho will satisfy every interest!

Located about eight miles from downtown Boise, nestled on the outskirts of Eagle, this 545 acre state park is an oasis tucked away between farmlands and two arms of the Boise River. If you are looking for recreation, relaxation, or sport, Eagle Island has a lot to offer.

At a fee of only $5 per vehicle, it is an economical way to spend a day out in the fresh air. The park also offers an annual pass of $40, adding $15 for each additional vehicle. Compare that price to one day at the local water-park, and you will be sold!

The sandy beach is a perfect respite for hot summer days. The swimming area is cordoned off with floating yellow buoys for swimmers, in three separate side-by-side areas, so that most of the swimming area is shallow enough for younger swimmers. There are no lifeguards on duty, but it’s easy to keep an eye on the little ones while relaxing on the beach.

Those who are more adventurous may want to skirt the buoys and swim to the small, wooded island that is visible from shore. The

If the kids are happy, everyone is happy.

heavily wooded “island” looks like an inviting wilderness to explore! One half expects to see Huck Finn paddling around the bend on a raft made of logs!

Though Huck Finn might not be out on the water for a paddle, non-motorized boating is permissible, and canoes, kayaks, and paddle-boards meander around the perimeter of the buoys, as well as blow up rafts and tubes of all sizes. There is air available near the snack bar for 50 cents if you have toys you would like to set sail.

Starting Labor Day every year, you can also enjoy the excitement of the waterslide located at the park. The waterslide operates from 12pm-8pm, Thursday through Sunday. You can buy tickets for $1 a ride, $7 for 10 rides, or $12 for an all day pass.

I was pleased to find out the park allows you to buy the 10 ride pass and split it between two children, so they each get five rides a piece (or any way you would like to divide them). You do not have to use all of your rides at once, but may come back throughout the day, and can even save rides purchased for another day, or for that matter, the next season! The slide is fast and refreshing, and is a great diversion when the little ones (or big ones) are ready for some fast-paced fun!

<img class="size-medium wp-image-8304" title="Eagle Island water slide.
No worries about clean bathrooms. There’s plenty. And the grassy picnic areas that border the beach are peppered with large shade trees, picnic tables, and barbecues. The children bounce back and forth from sand, to water, and to the play equipment located in the middle of the picnic area. Parents will find the day trip will constantly keep their active little ones engaged with outdoor play and fresh air instead of watching a television, or playing video games!

There are shelters available for rent for large parties or events, but there is plenty of room for last minute shindigs. I even noticed there were those who brought tents, and set them up in the grass as a home base for the day! It is nice to have the option to seek shade on the cool grass when you are ready for a break from the sand and sun.

For those who are fishing enthusiasts, the shoreline outside of the swimming area is the prime place to kick back and reel in some fish. It has a small sloping bank, overhung with tree branches, and there are conveniently located picnic tables nearby.

As you kick back on the banks, waiting for a nibble on your line, enjoy the breathtaking beauty of Idaho, as you gaze through the leaves of the trees at the azure skies dotted with fluffy clouds, watching regal hawks circling above, and the occasional bi-plane soaring over your head.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-8314" title="Eagle Island SP swimming beach.
Children bring small nets and catch minnows that zip through the shallow water. My kids spent hours collecting fish in buckets, or snorkeling so they could watch the underwater activity teeming beneath the surface.

If sitting idle, or water sports are not your cup of tea, you may want to explore the park’s five miles of trails available for hiking, horses, or walking your dog. Try your hand at the horseshoe pits, or the nine-hole disc-golf course, open May through September.

You can pack a cooler full of drinks and food, but if you get hungry or need a sweet treat, you can visit the snack bar and enjoy hotdogs, nachos, candy or a made-to-order snow cone.

Eagle Island State Park is a wonderful destination that can be enjoyed by everybody. You can spend the day physically active, or enjoy some downtime while the kids play. Driving out of the park after a full day, musing about the fun and activity that my family shared, I glanced in the rear-view mirror and saw my five-year-old son already zonked out before we had even passed through the exit of the park–another great day at Eagle Island!

Mountain biking in Brian's Head can be challenging and full of beauty. Here's some of the best single track the area has to offer.

Check out these single track routes that are all downhill and pass through the most beautiful and historic scenery the area has to offer.

<img class="size-full wp-image-8240" title="Second Left Hand Canynon- Photo By David Oare" src="http://www.freshairjunkie.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Second-Left-Hand-Caynon-Photo-By-David-Oare.jpg" alt="Second Left Hand Canyon trail.
By Dan Sanchez

Utah’s Brian Head Resort offers great mountain bike riding during the summer months. Here’s three great rides that will test your skills and give you some of the best views in the area.

Left Fork Of Bunker Creek – From the Brian Head Peak Road, about three miles out of town, follow the road to Sidney Peaks Trail. At the fork in the road head to the left and the trail will head downhill for about 12 miles. Here the single track is excellent and you’ll enjoy it all the way until it reaches Highway 143 at the bottom. Once you’re at the end, drop into the general store and wait for the shuttle to take you back to the resort .

Dark Hollow – This is one of the best downhill trails in the area and drops more than 5,000 feet in a little under 15 miles. The final miles are simple dirt roads, but it’s an exciting ride that starts at the high point of the Bunker Creek Trail. You’ll find the Dark Hollow trail here and as you head down, look for the markings on the trees. The single track here can get a little confusing.

Passing through Aspens in Dark Hollow. Photo by David Oare

You then continue down to Cub Lake, where you’ll eventually end up at Paradise Spring. Here you follow the trail on the left and glide down the fast single track in this area, but watch out for some steep rocky pitches. The single track ends abruptly at Second Hand Left Canyon Road. Turn left here and roll downhill to see some of the best scenery in the area. Once you reach the bottom, you can wait for the shuttle and head back.

Scout Camp Loop- This 10 mile loop is short but passes through lots of the area’s historical sites. Start at the Brian Head Hotel and head up to Bear Flat Road until it reaches the meadow. Find the double track that’s near the first cabin and head to the left. Follow the tree blazes to Munoz Meadow and then continue till you reach the intersection of Paradise Spring and Hendrickson Lake. Follow the trail around the lake and take the left trail that will eventually lead you to the Scout Camp. Follow the trail until you get to the “T” intersection on a graded dirt road. There’s lots of other trails that intersect so it’s important to say on the main trail. If you’re on the right trail, you’ll eventually get to the Pioneer Cabins where you’ll be back on single track again. You’ll eventually cross two beautiful meadows and reach another historical cabin. From here you can catch the main road back to the Brian Head Hotel.

When visiting Brian Head in the summer, there’s plenty of trail guides and maps that can guide you through other single track rides that are sure to challenge the novice to expert rider. For more information, you can visit www.brianhead.com
